LAC STE. ANNE COUNTY, Alberta — A devastating house fire east of Onoway on January 8 has claimed the life of one individual, local authorities confirmed. Despite the response from Lac Ste. Anne County Fire Services (LSACFS) and other emergency personnel, the fire caused extensive damage to the residence and resulted in a fatality.
Emergency services were dispatched following a 911 call reporting that three people were trapped inside the home. A total of 26 firefighters and four fire engines from three county fire stations arrived at the scene. Firefighters successfully rescued one person from the basement of the burning structure, but the individual later succumbed to their injuries. The other occupants managed to escape or were accounted for, according to authorities.
“Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victim during this incredibly difficult time,” said LSACFS Chief Randy Schroeder. “As all of our first responders are community members, Lac Ste. Anne County recognizes these tragedies have a profound impact on them. Lac Ste. Anne County is extremely proud of our responders’ extraordinary efforts to protect and serve our citizens.”
The fire caused significant structural damage to the home, resulting in its total loss. Officials have not released the identity of the victim, pending notification of next of kin. An investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is underway.
County Reeve Joe Blakeman commended the firefighters for their swift and heroic response. “In the face of this incident, our firefighters went above and beyond to protect lives and property,” Blakeman said. “Their quick actions and unwavering dedication are a testament to their professionalism, and every resident should feel proud of their incredible service to our community.”
No injuries were reported among fire service personnel.
Lac Ste. Anne County Fire Services is using the tragedy as an opportunity to remind residents of critical fire safety measures. Working smoke alarms and a well-rehearsed fire escape plan can significantly increase the chances of survival during a fire, officials emphasized.
For now, a grieving community awaits answers as investigators work to determine what sparked the blaze.
