Victim identified as Justin Hunt, 28; suspects arrested on Highway 16 west of the city

Three young men are charged with first-degree murder in the death of a man shot Friday morning in the parking lot of the Alberta Pipe Trades College in northwest Edmonton. Police believe the killing was targeted.

On Saturday, Edmonton Police identified the victim as Justin Hunt, 28. Wol Akuei, 21, John Morris, 20, and John Ocwalla, 19, are each charged with first-degree murder. Ocwalla also faces a charge of accessory after the fact to murder. None of the charges have been tested in court.

The shooting

Police were called to the area of 160 Street and 118 Avenue at about 8:27 a.m. on Friday, October 16. Officers found Hunt with life-threatening injuries, and he died at the scene. In a statement, Rod McKay of United Association Local 488, the union that shares the property with the college, said the shooting happened in the union’s parking lot at about 8:20 a.m.

Witnesses told Global News that someone in a grey sedan pulled into the lot, got out and opened fire. A student on the third floor told CTV News she heard five or six shots from the parking lot below. The college and union buildings were locked down while police secured the scene.

Arrests on Highway 16

Edmonton police say the suspect vehicle was spotted west of the city shortly after the shooting. With assistance from Parkland RCMP, officers stopped the vehicle on Highway 16 near Range Road 20 and took its three occupants into custody.

Police have not publicly detailed how the arrests unfolded.

Investigators want dashcam or security video of the suspect vehicle from Friday morning along three routes: 118 Avenue at 160 Street; Yellowhead Trail between 170 Street and Highway 60; and Highway 60 from Yellowhead Trail to Garden Valley Road.
