From Superman’s prairie childhood to Interstellar’s dust storms and Brad Pitt’s train robbery, Alberta has spent decades appearing on screen under someone else’s name.

The baseball game interrupted by a dust storm in Interstellar was played in Okotoks. The train Jesse James waits to rob in the darkness rolled through Fort Edmonton Park. And the prairie landscape that helped establish Clark Kent’s childhood in Superman was Alberta standing in for Kansas. 1, 2, 3

For Alberta viewers, recognizing those places can change a familiar movie. A scene remembered for its actors or special effects suddenly contains a school, a railway or a stretch of country they have driven past.

The province’s film history reaches well beyond westerns. It includes Marilyn Monroe and Bing Crosby, Christopher Reeve and Richard Pryor, Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Alberta has supplied frontier towns, modern streets, wheat fields, frozen lakes and mountain wilderness to productions spanning generations.

Some films were shot extensively here. Others came for a particular sequence before continuing elsewhere. This guide covers major and notable feature films made wholly or partly in Alberta, with the locations that explain the province’s part in each production. Years refer to release, rather than the year cameras arrived.

Recent films: Jennifer Lawrence, Jude Law and a new Colleen Hoover adaptation

Alberta’s screen history is still growing, and recent productions have found uses for places far removed from the familiar mountain postcard.

Reminders of Him (2026), adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel, brought a cast led by Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers, with Lauren Graham and Bradley Whitford, to a production using Calgary, Bragg Creek and rural southern Alberta. Directed by Vanessa Caswill, it adds a contemporary romantic drama to the province’s better-known action films and westerns. 4, 5

For Die My Love (2025), director Lynne Ramsay used the Calgary region for a drama starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, alongside Sissy Spacek, Nick Nolte and LaKeith Stanfield. Filming took place from August to October 2024. 6, 7

Calgary Economic Development identifies locations including Sikome Lake in Fish Creek Provincial Park, Vecova, the Calgary Shrine Event Centre, Didsbury, the Balzac area and Okotoks. A vacant farmhouse was renovated for the production. Location manager Edsel Hilchie described how the house, surrounding landscape and nearby roads suited Ramsay’s vision. These were working locations chosen for a particular story, rather than simply a collection of Alberta’s most famous views. 6

The Order (2024) takes that transformation in another direction. Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult lead the crime thriller, with Tye Sheridan and Jurnee Smollett, as Alberta stands in for the American Pacific Northwest. 8

Locations identified in a scene-by-scene guide include Calgary’s Palace Theatre, the Waldorf Hotel in Drumheller, buildings in Didsbury, and the communities of Wayne and Dorothy. Kananaskis Trail and Barrier Lake Dam also appear. Its geography will be familiar to viewers who know both the badlands and the roads west of Calgary, even though the characters are travelling through a different country. 9

Another 2024 release, The Thicket, returned to the western with Peter Dinklage and Juliette Lewis, supported by Levon Hawke and Esmé Creed-Miles. Filmed in and around Calgary, it opened the Calgary International Film Festival that year. Metallica’s James Hetfield also appears in the cast. 10, 11

Interstellar and Inception: Christopher Nolan’s Alberta

Few films have given everyday southern Alberta locations a more unusual assignment than Interstellar (2014).

Before Matthew McConaughey’s character leaves Earth, the film establishes a farming community facing ecological collapse. The Cooper farmhouse was built near Longview, and Longview School supplied the setting for the parent-teacher meeting. Seaman Stadium in Okotoks hosted the baseball game cut short by a dust storm. Fort Macleod’s main street also appears during the storm sequence. 1

Those scenes ground a story whose cast includes Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain and Michael Caine. For local viewers, they also make Interstellar unusually easy to connect to a map: its Earthbound story begins in places that still have ordinary lives outside the film.

Nolan had already used Alberta for Inception (2010). Fortress Mountain became the setting for the snowbound fortress sequence, one of the film’s nested dream worlds. Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Elliot Page and Tom Hardy head the ensemble. 41

The two films show very different uses of the province. One builds its emotional foundation around farms, a school and a ballpark. The other turns a mountain into the setting for an elaborate action sequence.

Superman grew up here—and Calgary became Metropolis

Long before modern superhero franchises became a permanent fixture at the cinema, Alberta helped introduce Christopher Reeve’s Superman.

In Superman (1978), southern Alberta’s wheat country supplied the landscape of Clark Kent’s upbringing. Blackie and Barons are among the communities associated with the Smallville scenes. The rural setting gives the early part of Richard Donner’s film a recognizably different character from the city Clark eventually enters. 3, 4

The film’s cast includes Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman and Marlon Brando, though a place in the cast does not mean every actor worked at the Alberta locations.

The province took a larger urban role in Superman III (1983). Calgary doubled for Metropolis, while High River and Blackie contributed Smallville scenes. Reeve returned alongside Richard Pryor, Annette O’Toole and Robert Vaughn. The American Film Institute records a five-week Alberta location shoot beginning in August 1982. 12, 13

For viewers interested in old Calgary streetscapes, the third film is worth revisiting for the city as much as the superhero.

Clint Eastwood, Brad Pitt and the Alberta western

Alberta’s foothills and ranch country have repeatedly supplied the American West. Several of the most acclaimed films made here belong to that tradition, although they tell very different stories.

Unforgiven: Big Whiskey was built near Longview

Unforgiven (1992) brought Clint Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Morgan Freeman and Richard Harris together in a western about violence, reputation and the stories people tell about both.

The fictional town of Big Whiskey, Wyoming, was constructed near Longview. Drumheller also contributed locations, and the film’s credits thank several Alberta communities for their help. The production was not exclusively Canadian: the AFI records a later California shoot involving a period railway. 14

Eastwood directed as well as starred. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, directing and supporting actor for Hackman. Its Alberta setting belongs to one of the most celebrated westerns of the modern era. 14

Legends of the Fall: Alberta as Montana ranch country

In Legends of the Fall (1994), Brad Pitt, Anthony Hopkins, Aidan Quinn, Henry Thomas and Julia Ormond inhabit a family saga set against Montana’s mountain country.

Alberta supplied much of that landscape, with filming associated with Morley, Ghost River country and the Bow Valley. The ranch setting and broad views are essential to the film’s sense of a family living at a distance from the wider world. 4, 15

Open Range: Costner and Duvall in the foothills

Open Range (2003) paired Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall as cattlemen confronting a powerful rancher. Annette Bening and Michael Gambon round out the principal cast, with Costner also directing.

Morley and Longview are documented filming locations. The film gives Alberta’s open country plenty of room on screen before the conflict closes in on the town. 16

Brokeback Mountain: Wyoming, filmed in Alberta

Brokeback Mountain (2005) used Alberta for the relationship between Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist, played by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway play their wives.

Kananaskis locations, including Elbow Falls and Upper Kananaskis Lake, helped create the mountain country. Fort Macleod and Calgary also contributed to the production. Ranchman’s Cookhouse and Dancehall is among the identifiable Calgary locations. 42

Ang Lee’s film makes the contrast between mountain freedom and life back in town central to its story. Alberta supplied both sides of that divide.

Jesse James: the train robbery at Fort Edmonton Park

Pitt returned for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (2007), with Casey Affleck as Ford and a cast including Sam Rockwell and Jeremy Renner.

Its Alberta locations include Fort Edmonton Park, Heritage Park in Calgary, the Fairmont Palliser and Kananaskis. The nighttime train robbery sequence was filmed at Fort Edmonton Park—a particularly striking connection for anyone who knows the attraction from daytime family visits. 2, 17

Heritage Calgary records that 250 local residents worked as extras in the governor’s ballroom scene at the Palliser. Winnipeg also supplied locations, so the film’s recreated nineteenth-century America extends beyond Alberta. 18

The wilderness films: Alaska without leaving Alberta

Alberta’s mountains have repeatedly stood in for Alaska and other remote landscapes. The resulting films range from survival thrillers to a family story about a sled dog.

The Revenant (2015) stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Hugh Glass, alongside Tom Hardy and Domhnall Gleeson. Kananaskis and the badlands near Drumheller are among its Alberta filming areas. The production also worked outside the province; the landscape seen in the finished film combines several locations. 15, 17

The Edge (1997) used Alberta for an Alaska survival story starring Anthony Hopkins, Alec Baldwin and Harold Perrineau. Canmore, Banff and Kananaskis are among its locations. A regional filming history identifies Whiteman’s Pond and Spray Lakes among the specific sites. 15, 19

In The Bourne Legacy (2012), Jeremy Renner’s Aaron Cross emerges from icy water at Elbow Falls. Kananaskis supplies the mountain setting for the film’s Alaska sequences. The cast also includes Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton. 17

Togo (2019), starring Willem Dafoe as musher Leonhard Seppala, used Fortress Mountain, Abraham Lake, the Cline River area and a private ranch outside Cochrane. Reporting on the production also documents the work of local sled dogs and mountain guides. Alberta’s contribution extended well beyond what appeared behind the actors. 20

For Land (2021), Robin Wright directed and starred opposite Demián Bichir. Moose Mountain supplied the setting for the remote cabin, while the Elbow River near Bragg Creek also appears. Alberta represents the Wyoming wilderness where Wright’s character attempts to rebuild her life. 21

Ghostbusters, Predator and the X-Men

Alberta’s small towns and mountain locations have also become part of several major screen franchises.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) stars Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard, Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd, with members of the original cast returning. Fort Macleod’s Empress Theatre and the Drumheller-area landscape are among its recognizable features. Crossfield and Beiseker also supplied locations. Together, the Alberta sites become the fictional community of Summerville, Oklahoma. 4, 17

Prey (2022) gives the province a much earlier fictional identity. Amber Midthunder leads the Predator prequel, with Dakota Beavers and Dane DiLiegro, in a story set in the eighteenth century.

The production filmed extensively on Stoney Nakoda lands, with additional locations around Calgary, Moose Mountain and the Elbow River. Reporting based on the production notes describes a private Pipe ceremony before filming began, attended by Indigenous leaders and members of the production. That involvement is an important part of the film’s Alberta history. 22

In X2: X-Men United (2003), the dam between Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes becomes part of the Alkali Lake setting. Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and Halle Berry lead the cast. Much of the production took place elsewhere, and the dam’s destruction used a model filmed in California. 23

Other franchise connections are shorter but still recognizable. Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) brought Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart to Fortress Mountain for snow scenes. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017), starring Andy Serkis and Woody Harrelson, also used Kananaskis winter footage within a production largely filmed in British Columbia. 4, 15

Hockey, bobsleds and Jackie Chan

Not every Alberta movie location is hiding behind a different name.

Cool Runnings (1993) returns to Calgary for a fictionalized telling of the Jamaican bobsled team’s appearance at the 1988 Winter Olympics. John Candy stars alongside Leon, Doug E. Doug, Rawle D. Lewis and Malik Yoba. Canada Olympic Park and Ranchman’s are among the Calgary locations. Here, the city gets to play itself. 17

Mystery, Alaska (1999) goes the other way. Russell Crowe, Burt Reynolds, Hank Azaria and Mary McCormack star in the story of a small-town hockey team facing the New York Rangers.

The town was created near Canmore. Disney’s archive describes a set built on the site of a former coal mine; local location histories identify the Quarry Lake area. Viewers are watching an invented Alaska community surrounded by real Alberta mountains. 24, 25

For Shanghai Noon (2000), Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson brought a western comedy to the province, with Lucy Liu as the kidnapped princess. Disney identifies the Drumheller area as the stand-in for Nevada. The badlands supplied a very different setting from the martial-arts films that first made Chan famous. 26

Edmonton’s screen history: a snow day, a shopping mall and a horror hit

Edmonton’s film connections include more than the Jesse James railway sequence.

Snow Day (2000), starring Chevy Chase, Chris Elliott and Jean Smart, filmed in both Edmonton and Calgary. Edmonton’s Gallagher Park area appears in the comedy about a community transformed by a heavy snowfall. 27, 28

West Edmonton Mall has played a particularly visible role. Christmas in Wonderland (2007) stars Patrick Swayze, Carmen Electra, Chris Kattan and Tim Curry in a family comedy set in Edmonton. The mall is part of the premise, rather than an anonymous building disguised as somewhere else. 29

The Bollywood film Humko Deewana Kar Gaye (2006), starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif, also used the mall, alongside Calgary and Rocky Mountain locations. 2

Earlier, David Cronenberg’s Fast Company (1979) filmed at Edmonton International Speedway, with Whyte Avenue and Centennial Mall also appearing. The cast includes William Smith, Claudia Jennings and John Saxon. It offers a record of an Edmonton that has changed substantially since filming. 2

At the other end of the production scale, Skinamarink, which premiered in 2022 before its 2023 theatrical release, was made in director Kyle Edward Ball’s parents’ Edmonton home. Its international attention came from a domestic space deliberately made unfamiliar and frightening. 2

Before the blockbusters: Marilyn Monroe, Bing Crosby and James Stewart

Alberta was attracting major film stars long before the productions that dominate present-day location guides.

River of No Return (1954) brought Marilyn Monroe and Robert Mitchum to Banff and Jasper for filming in 1953. Jasper’s historical society identifies the Devona area beside the Snake Indian River among the locations. Glenbow’s collection also documents Monroe’s time in Alberta, including her connection to the Banff Springs Hotel. 30, 31

The Far Country (1954), directed by Anthony Mann and starring James Stewart, Ruth Roman and Walter Brennan, used Jasper-area mountain locations, including Mount Edith Cavell and the Columbia Icefield. 30

Earlier still, Billy Wilder’s The Emperor Waltz (1948) starred Bing Crosby and Joan Fontaine. Jasper’s museum lists Leach Lake, Jasper Park Lodge and Edith Cavell Road among its filming sites. 30

The archives matter here. These productions survive in photographs and local records as well as in the finished movies, preserving encounters between visiting film crews and the people who lived and worked in the parks.

More Alberta films worth revisiting

The province’s filmography also includes smaller hits, Canadian productions and cult favourites that deserve room beside the blockbusters.

Little Big Man (1970)

Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Chief Dan George, Faye Dunaway. Morley and the Bow River; local Indigenous participation is part of its production history. 32

Buffalo Bill and the Indians, or Sitting Bull’s History Lesson (1976)

Cast: Paul Newman, Joel Grey, Harvey Keitel. Robert Altman’s western satire filmed largely on Stoney Nakoda lands. 33

Silver Streak (1976)

Cast: Gene Wilder, Richard Pryor, Jill Clayburgh. Calgary and railway locations, including Alyth Yard. 34

Days of Heaven (1978)

Cast: Richard Gere, Brooke Adams, Sam Shepard. Whiskey Gap and Calgary’s Heritage Park represent parts of Terrence Malick’s Texas-set story. 18, 35

Rad (1986)

Cast: Bill Allen, Lori Loughlin, Talia Shire. Cochrane and Calgary appear in the BMX cult favourite. 36

FUBAR (2002)

Cast: David Lawrence, Paul Spence. Michael Dowse’s Calgary-shot mockumentary follows Terry and Dean. 37

RV (2006)

Cast: Robin Williams, Cheryl Hines, Jeff Daniels. Southern Alberta locations include Highway 40 and the Kananaskis area. 15

Passchendaele (2008)

Cast: Paul Gross, Caroline Dhavernas, Joe Dinicol. Battle scenes were filmed on Tsuut’ina Nation land near Calgary. 38

Cold Pursuit (2019)

Cast: Liam Neeson, Laura Dern, Tom Bateman. Kananaskis and Fortress Mountain contributed to a production also filmed in British Columbia. 15

Let Him Go (2020)

Cast: Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Lesley Manville. Fort Macleod, Didsbury, Drumheller and Calgary stand in for parts of the northern United States. 39, 40

The locations are part of the story

Taken together, these films make an unusual map of Alberta. Fort Edmonton Park belongs to a western. An Okotoks ballpark belongs to a science-fiction epic. A Calgary hotel hosts a nineteenth-century ballroom, while a familiar shopping mall becomes the centre of a Christmas comedy.

The connection is often most interesting at that everyday scale. A mountain range may be recognizable from a distance; a school doorway or a theatre frontage can bring a movie much closer to home.

Next time Interstellar reaches its baseball game, watch the stands. When Jesse James steps toward the train, look beyond Brad Pitt. Alberta has been in those scenes all along.
