A serious accident during the annual Alberta Beach Snowmobile Days festival on Lac Ste Anne has claimed the life of one man after the sled he was driving suddenly accelerated and collided with a parked truck.   Investigators believe a malfunction in the throttle caused the snowmobile to lose control.

41 year old Michael Moore from Sherwood Park has been confirmed the man killed in the accident.

Witnesses to the tragic event said that just after 10:30 am Sunday morning, Moore was moving his snowmobile to a different area when it suddenly took off.   He wasn’t wearing a helmet at the time and was pronounced deceased on scene from the impact of the collision by arriving medical personnel.

In a statement on the SnoMo Days organizers Facebook page, the father of the driver who passed away posted the following regarding the tragedy.

Hi guys…. Really appreciate you guys putting on an awesome event today. Unfortunately my son Michael Moore lost his life today due to a tragic accident. We love the camaraderie we have built since our first race at Alberta Beach Alberta Beach SnoMo Days.
Many people came to me after the accident and didn’t want to race.
Mike and I went there to race today and we were shooting for Mike LaValley and pumpkin, we were determined to beat these guys. When asked about the race, my response was, Mike and I came here to race, unfortunately we didn’t get to do that, but I know that Mike certainly would want that to happen…. Like I said, “we came to race”
Thank you to the RCMP, Peace Officers and the fire department who came to help with Mike. You guys were amazing.
I lost my son today, he was my best friend and we have been doing this for a long time… unfortunately things happen… and sometimes tragic.
This was his final ride today. We both loved this and he passed doing what he loved.
Father and son… forever.
Love you Mike… you were always my best friend and the most awesome son ever.
As soon as funeral arrangements are made, will let you know.
Again, thanks for putting on an amazing event…
Greg Moore

SnoMo Days organizers elected to finish out the days events, due in part to the request by the family’s request.

There was at the time speculation that the entire event had been cancelled where it was later announced that the just the Monster Truck events were called off due to the extreme cold and the trucks not being able to run properly.

Organizers did announce that Monday’s ATV Poker Rally was also cancelled due to the extreme cold forecasted for tomorrow.
