Eight Men Charged Following RCMP Probe into Copper Wire Thefts in Central Alberta
Eight individuals are facing a variety of charges after an extensive RCMP investigation into the theft of copper wire from oil and gas facilities across central Alberta.
On Monday, the RCMP announced the outcomes of its eastern and central crime reduction units’ investigation, which utilized plainclothes officers, bait equipment, and even a surveillance aircraft to track and apprehend suspects.
“The Alberta RCMP is committed to (using) all resources available to ensure the safety of Albertans and their property; however, it’s important that everyone do their part to help,” said a statement in the RCMP news release. It encouraged community members to take proactive measures such as laser engraving their metals, installing fences and cameras, questioning suspicious sellers, and promptly reporting any unusual activity.
The investigation, launched in October, was a collaborative effort between law enforcement and industry groups concerned about the rising theft of copper wire and other valuable metals from oil and gas sites. By working closely with industry representatives, investigators identified areas frequently targeted by thieves, leading to the apprehension of multiple suspects.
