Man Charged in Stabbing Death on Alexis First Nation

Mayerthorpe RCMP have charged 33-year-old Dalton Earl Cardinal with second degree murder.

Police took one man in custody Friday after the victim was found stabbed at a residence on the Alexis Nakota Sioux Nation.

Mayerthorpe RCMP responded to a 911 call that reported the stabbing.  Upon arrival, the victim,  28-year-old Elzeare Cardinal, was located deceased by responding units.   As per protocol, the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit was deployed and took over the investigation which included use of the Parkland Dog Service unit as well as the Edson Forensic Identification Section.

Subsequently, RCMP arrested the suspect, 33-year-old Dalton Earl Cardinal and have now charged him with Second-Degree-Homicide.  Cardinal was taken before a Justice of the Peace and was remanded into custody.

Cardinal has his next court date set for Thursday, Feb. 13, 2025, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Mayerthorpe.
