What to Watch in February – and Don’t Miss Events
With the mercury expected to hover in the minus-20 range for most of early February, many of us will be inclined to spend more time in front of the TV, waiting for warmer weather or at least a return to seasonal norms. Fortunately, the streaming services have plenty to offer. Here’s a look at some shows worth checking out and upcoming events to mark on your calendar.
Netflix: American Primeval

This gritty American West mini-series focuses on the battle for dominance between the Mormons, incoming settlers, and the U.S. Army in 1857 Utah.
As a long-time fan of westerns—something I inherited from watching Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns with my father—I was immediately drawn to this series. If you enjoyed modern historical dramas like Hell on Wheels or Yellowstone (now also streaming on Netflix), you’ll appreciate American Primeval.
The plot moves quickly, and the cinematography is both aggressive and captivating. Unlike Kevin Costner’s Horizon, which introduced too many plot lines and characters, this six-episode series is straightforward and easy to follow. If you’re a fan of westerns and intense storytelling, it’s a must-watch.
Apple TV: Shrinking

Starring Harrison Ford and Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Shrinking tells the story of two psychiatrists with opposing approaches to therapy.
I was pleasantly surprised by how good this series is, despite already being a fan of both actors. I’ve come to trust that just about anything on Apple TV is worth watching, and this show didn’t disappoint. The episodes are short, most around 30 minutes, making it perfect for binge-watching. It’s smart, funny, and engaging—a winning combination.
Amazon Prime: Dexter – Original Sin

I remember when Dexter was in its third season and generating tons of buzz. I finally gave in, started watching it, and quickly became addicted to the quirky, dark storytelling.
Dexter: Original Sin is the second spin-off from the original series, following the single-season Dexter: New Blood. This new series takes us back to Dexter’s early days as a rookie under the guidance of his father, played by Christian Slater, who tries to teach him how to be an “ethical” serial killer. It’s every bit as intriguing as the original and worth watching for fans of the franchise.
Upcoming Events in February

Super Bowl LIX (Sunday, February 9)
The Kansas City Chiefs aim to make history by becoming the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. Standing in their way are the Philadelphia Eagles, who finished the season with a 14-3 record.
Vegas oddsmakers have the game at near-even odds, with the Chiefs holding a slim 1.5-point advantage. Personally, I expect Kansas City to win—Patrick Mahomes is a generational talent you can never bet against.
NHL 4-Nation Faceoff (February 12-20)
The upcoming NHL 4-Nation Faceoff may not be a true “best-on-best” tournament with stars like Alexander Ovechkin and Leon Draisaitl watching from the sidelines, but it’s still generating plenty of buzz.
For the first time, we’ll get to see Connor McDavid, Sidney Crosby, and Nathan MacKinnon all playing on the same team. The tournament replaces this year’s All-Star break and kicks off on Wednesday, February 12, with Canada taking on Sweden.
The Championship Game is scheduled for Thursday, February 20, and I’m crossing my fingers for a Canada vs. USA showdown.
