RCMP Clock Driver at 182 km/h on Highway 33

Stephanie Dawn Sebastian pleads guilty to travelling 82kms an hour over the posted speed limit.

A Barrhead-area woman with a lengthy history of speeding offences has been handed a significant penalty after being caught driving at nearly double the speed limit on Highway 33.

During a December 13 session at the Barrhead Court of Justice, Justice Bruce Garriock imposed a $2,000 fine and a 21-day driving suspension on Stephanie Dawn Sebastian. The decision followed her guilty plea to exceeding the posted speed limit.

According to provincial traffic Crown prosecutor Mark Fosiey, Sebastian was clocked by police driving a 2012 Dodge Challenger at 182 km/h on June 15, 2024. The posted speed limit for the highway section is 100 km/h.

“The road in question is a paved, undivided highway, and the accused overtook multiple vehicles at a dangerously high speed,” Fosiey stated. “Fortunately, weather and road conditions were clear at the time of the offence, but such speeds create serious risks regardless.”

A Troubling Pattern of Speeding Violations

Fosiey outlined Sebastian’s extensive record of traffic offences, which includes five speeding convictions in the past five years. These infractions involved her driving 30 km/h, 28 km/h, and 34 km/h over the speed limit, as well as two incidents where she exceeded the limit by 20 km/h.

Her record also revealed three demerit-based licence suspensions since 1994. In 2023, she completed a demerit course to address previous violations, but this appears to have had little effect on her driving habits.

Local Impacts and Enforcement on Highway 33

Highway 33, a key route connecting Barrhead to surrounding communities, sees regular traffic from residents and commercial vehicles. Speeding incidents, especially at extreme levels, are a serious concern for local law enforcement and community members who rely on the road daily.

RCMP and traffic units frequently patrol Highway 33 and other major routes in the area to curb dangerous driving. Radar units, speed traps, and community reports play a critical role in identifying and addressing habitual offenders like Sebastian.

Local residents often voice concerns about the dangers posed by high-speed drivers, particularly on undivided highways like this one. Excessive speeding not only endangers the driver but also other road users, many of whom are families, farmers, and commuters traveling to and from Barrhead.

Accountability and Community Safety

During court proceedings, Sebastian’s defence counsel stated that she had been instructed to surrender her licence immediately, signaling her compliance with the sentence.

However, this case serves as a reminder of the severe consequences of reckless driving in the community. The substantial fine and licence suspension reflect the court’s firm stance on ensuring the safety of local residents and holding repeat offenders accountable.

Law enforcement officials encourage residents to report dangerous driving to assist in proactive measures for community safety
